GAME MECHANICS

What is this game?
The Home Tree is a game about characters turning into tiny faeries living in a magical tree surrounded by a wild forest. It mixes slice-of-life with mingles and events, including appearances of strange creatures in the woods.

Do you have age limits?
There are no player age limits for joining the game, but players under the age of 18 should to not engage in any sexual activities on the site. Be aware that there is nonsexual nudity found in a lot of NPCs and creatures.

What size are characters, now?
The human size of 6 feet is now the equivalent of about three inches. Players of shorter and taller can use that measurement to figure out their character's approximate size.

Where do the characters live?
Wherever you want them to! The little houses in the Tree are available to everyone, and fit about four people each. More housing can be built, and the space between floors in the Tree is large enough to stack them.

How do all these characters of different origins understand each other?
When arriving in the Tree, every character will link to the Tree's Life Stream, which translates every non-animal language automatically. Thus, there's only one language in the Tree, even if a character is bilingual. (This includes writing as well.)

Can we canon update?
Certainly! Just contact the mods first to add what happened to your character during this update and what new powers they might have gotten (or lost!). After the update, the character will arrive on the bottom floor once again. If they have changed enough during their update to warrant picking the other type of gem, please mention this is your update.

What happens to my character while I'm on hiatus or during canon updating?
This can be discussed with the mods, or your character can simply have disappeared into the forest and will return again later, groggy and confused.

What happens if my character dies?
A cocoon will start growing in their home (or on a random place if they do not have a home), and a week later your character will hatch from it, brought back to life. They will have scars from any wounds they may have suffered during their death, and any lost limbs will not be returned. Death is serious, and dying more than once is dangerous for the character's soul.

Do you have events?
We do! The Home Tree is a slice-of-life game with a twist, so we have events of strange things happening in the woods, new quests that need to be solved and the search for lost former denizens of the Tree.

What is the Faerie Ring?
The Faerie Ring is a ring of white mushrooms around the Tree, that acts like a protective shield for it. It hides the Adventurers from the outside by illusion, and is impossible to cross by many dangerous creatures.

What about the flora and fauna of the Tree?
Good question! The Tree itself seems to be an oak, but all kinds of plants have taken root in it and pop up here and there. They all appear to be Scandinavian in origin, so if it can be found in that climate, it is quite possible that a twig or a plant has mixed with the Tree.

As for the fauna, the Tree hosts a rather large array of insects, birds and tree-dwelling mammals. However, the ants are the size of cats and a squirrel might just as well be an elephant, so caution is advised.

How do the community tags work?
To make it easier to find posts, entries in the main community must be tagged by character name. Old tags marked with a mushroom are previous characters from the game's first run, so please do not use those - instead, you will be given a new tag by the mods. Some tags may have to be shortened to fit.

CHARACTERS

What kind of characters can we apply for?
Any fictional characters from mediums like anime/manga/comics/books/television/movies/videogames/etc. are allowed, but not real life people (like Barack Obama) or deities not from a canon. (So deities like Hades from Disney's Hercules would be okay).

Do you allow doubles?
We do not generally allow doubles unless they are from appropriately different stories, such as the versions of Link in Zelda games, or MCU vs comics.

Are OC's allowed?
Yes! OCs from original worlds are greatly encouraged! We do not accept OC's from canon worlds (such as your own student from My Hero Academia, etc.) This does not include characters created from tabletop roleplaying games such as D&D or World of Darkness, online games like Blizzard's World of Warcraft, or any game/medium that has a setting specifically created to make OCs.

What about carry-overs from other games/AU's?
No, we do not currently allow CRAU characters.

How about very minor characters?
Characters without a lot of background are also welcome, but should at least have enough personality to review outside of your app. This will be by very case-by-case basis as well.

Cast caps?
As we're not quite sure how big the game will be, we will start with a cap of five for the first app round and go from there.

Character age limits?
Characters must be their species equivalent of 5 and up.

My character is a tiny/huge creature!
Since the Home Tree is a game about tiny people in a tree, any characters that are tiny in canon will now be as large as all other characters. Huge characters will still be huge in comparison to the other characters, but still scaled down to the setting. (Max one foot tall.)

My character is a non-humanoid/animal/creature. Can I app them?
If the character is intelligent enough to understand language, then yes! We do prefer them to be able to speak it, too, but it is not a rule. If you want them to suddenly be able to talk, the Life Steam can be used.

My character was here during the original run of the game!
Welcome back! They're allowed to keep their memories of the first game, although it is slightly fuzzy and some things are different from what they were used to. Their tags will also be updated rather than getting new ones, so please let us know if you're a returning Adventurer!

POWERS/ABILITIES

What about their powers?
The characters will keep most of their powers and abilities they had in their canon worlds, but if they are extremely powerful and risking automatic godmode the Life Stream will feed on the excessive powers and lower them to a more acceptable level. This includes reality-warping powers and creating complicated objects from thin air.

🍃 Any fire, electrical or heat-based powers or any other powers that could possibly ignite wood will have to be changed, either by removing the power completely or replacing it with another element. See the section for this in the app.

🍃 Characters with nature-based powers will not be able to use them on the Tree itself.

🍃 Flight, floating, levitation, super-jumping and any abilities that can propel a character through the air will also be removed. This includes the removal of any wings the character might already have, and will replace them with the gem-chosen wings.

My character needs this energy/outside thing to survive/exist, what will they do?
The Life Stream will now support them instead!

My character is a vampire, how will they get blood?
The Life Stream will partially support them, but they might need to get some animal blood now and then. They do not suffer any penalties from drinking animal blood and it sustains them normally. Otherwise, they might also look for volunteers.

How will they deal with the sun, then?
Staying inside the Faerie Ring around the Tree should protect them from dying from the sun, but if desired it might still be uncomfortable for your specific character. The rest of the forest has no specific protection against thew sun other than the foliage being very thick and blocking some rays.

My character has an illness/curse/problem, how will that be handled?
The Life Stream will halt their decline so they cannot get any worse, but they will still have the symptoms. Anything contagious will no longer affect anyone else.

Can my character bring a pet?
If the character really needs it and that pet is not intelligent enough to qualify as their own character, yes. It cannot be a mount or other riding animals (as they must be holding it by the time they are swept to the game) and it will scale down with the character - so no giant puppies.

Your character can only bring one pet, however, so if you apply with a pokémon trainer, you could only bring one pokémon. The pet will not get their own gem or wings, unless it already has some.

My character is a summoner, can they still summon things?
Your character will be able to summon small weapons and small animals (such as familiars, carbuncles and other pets) but nothing humanoid or larger than the character, or something that can act on their own. (So no knights, demons, titans, etc.)

What about mechas and similar?
Unfortunately, those would be far too big and will have to stay in their own world.

My character has access to giant dimensions of things!
That will have to be nerfed and discussed in a case-by-case basis.

What items can my character bring with them?
Anything that is on their person at the point they are taken. As an example, if a character has just put down their sword on the ground before coming to the Tree, the sword will not come with them - but if it is in the scabbard, tied to the character's belt or still in their hand, it will.

THE GEMS

How do we decide what gem our characters should have?
This is mostly up to you! A super-good pious paladin character would normally be drawn to the day gem, but if their fight against darkness means a lot to them, the night gem might interest them more. It's all relative.

Do we have to hold the gem in our hands to make it work?
No, you can make it into jewelry - a necklace is the safest option, but the important thing is to keep it against your skin to make it work. Putting it in your pocket or similar will cancel the effect since it is no longer touching you - however, there is about a 15 second grace period before they disappear.

Can we change gems later in the game?
It may be possible in some events and during canon updating, but in general? No.

Can we steal/borrow/touch other people's gems?
No, touching a gem that does not belong to that character will result in a rather nasty shock, almost as if hit by lightning. It will return to its owner automatically.

What is the difference between the gems?
The simplest difference? Pixie wings vs moth wings. It may have other effects in the future, though.

Can I have butterfly wings instead of moth wings?
No, it has to be moth wings. There are some colorful moths, however, but their colors are more pastel than vibrant. A muted color is part of the night gem's magic.

Can I have butterfly wings instead of pixie wings?
Yes, but they would have to be at least translucent and smaller than the night gem wings.

Can we have one of each wing?
No, you can only pick one gem and get that gem's wingtype.
