Inside the Tree Outside the Tree Outside the Forest

creatures inside the tree
THE GUARDIAN - More commonly known as the Tree, the Home Tree itself is a living being that acts as a guardian of the forest. It has been quite some time since it spoke to anyone, though, and some believe the Guardian has died and that is why strange creatures walk the forest these days.

THE CANOPY CREW - Hundreds of jewel-colored beetles the size of an Adventurer live in the canopy of the Tree. They look similar to flower beetles, and are quick little things that don't care much about anything other than their job. These beetles soak up the energies of the sun and moon to bring back to the Heart of the Tree. They unfortunately only live for about a month in this beetle stage, but their armor pieces can be harvested from the dead ones in the Bug Garden. It's there you can also find their huge grubs among the mulch and dirt.

THE LIGHTBRINGERS - Other kinds of insects in the Tree are the fireflies and glow-worms that bring light and warmth to Adventurer homes. Both are about the size of an average cat to the Adventurers and will bond with them if cared for. The fireflies live for about four months and the glow-worms stay in their wriggly form for four as well before they go to become beetles and breed in the Bug Garden. However, they can also easily be killed by neglect, starvation or just squishing. Young Lightbringers and the eggs are found in the Bug Garden, if your friend happens to pass away, but the keeper might not give you a new one if you somehow caused the first one's demise.

SERVANTS OF THE TREE

A Servant is a small glowing spirit that is mostly made up of a head with a small body. They are incorporeal, very translucent, and are unable to touch Adventurers in any way - they will simply pass through them. They exist to serve the Tree, hence their title, but do not like to be treated like servants by the Adventurers.

Chime - Chime is a golden spirit in charge of Chime's Shop, a randomly stocking market, and the mount rentals. Unlike the other Servants, she has cracks in her form, almost like old scars.

She only communicates with tiny bell-like chimes.

Tone - Another spirit, this time in a blue-purple color rather than Chime's gold. He is in charge of the Dust Fountain, and gives the Adventurers their shares of fairy dust.

He only communicates with different notes of music.

Buzz - The third Servant of the Tree is an orange spirit in charge of the Bug Garden, where she takes care of all the canopy crew, lightning bugs and glow-worms that breed there. She never seems very interested in Adventurers, but will help them find a new pet for their stoves.

She only communicates by buzzing like a bee.

Sigh - A surprisingly sullen and easily annoyed gray spirit, Sigh is in charge of the Ruins and takes care of the shrines there. He is the one that writes the name of the Adventurers in one and removes them to add to the other, depending on if they are present in the world or not.

He only communicates (unsurprisingly) by sighs.

Thought - The red leader of the spirits, Thought guards the Heart of the Tree and is the only Servant able to fully 'speak', even if it is by telepathy rather than words. He rarely seems to have time for the Adventurers, though, and seems slightly eccentric and possibly unstable. Unlike the others he is corporeal, and can touch the Adventurers. He lashes out at times at those who get to close to the Heart, and the toxic burns he leaves are painful for days.

🍃 Supposedly, there are more Servants out there, yet to be recovered. 🍃

BLUE ROSE - A strange flower-like being known as a flower helper, Blue Rose appeared inside a blue rose bud outside the Tree, and now helps to take care of all the plants within the faerie circle. She knows a lot about herbs and edible things, and while her language is alien and strange, she knows the names of flora.

THE WHITE RAT - This white rat of typical lab rat stock appeared at the Tree one day and now randomly visits at her leisure. She's far more intelligent than the average rat, and seems to understand speech. Her tail has strange carvings on it that match the ones in the ruin. This rat also appears to have a connection with the other creatures outside the Tree, and has been seen riding on both the Hollow Lady and the Violinist.

THE VIOLINIST - This strange creature appears as an irresistibly attractive (nude) man to everyone who fancy men (though without resembling a specific person). To those not attracted to men, he appears as a gaunt, drowned and emaciated corpse with water reeds in his long, tattered hair. (Thankfully he cannot cross the Faerie Ring).

Carrying around a violin, he has the ability to charm people into dancing by playing it, and also seems to have some powers over water. He resides in a lake not too far from the Tree, and his motives are rather unclear. Is he a friend or foe... or just too alien to understand human minds?

THE HOLLOW LADY This red-haired and voluptuous woman is human-looking at first sight, but soon reveals her inhuman features when she turns around. Her back is hollowed out and looks like it is lined with bark, and she has a cow's tail.

The Hollow Lady seems like an ally of the Tree, as she can pass the Faerie Ring without issue, but she also seems to have a somewhat strange mind and is known to at least be friendly with the Violinist. She can repair the Faerie Ring if it has somehow gotten damaged, and moves anything too large for the Adventurers that happens to have ended up within or close to the ring.

THE UNICORN - When the full moon is out, the unicorn can be seen walking in the woods. She seems to only accept virgins touching her, but is gentle and shy even with those that are not. She can cross the Faerie Ring and sometimes comes to rest by the roots of the Tree.

If she really likes someone, she might allow them to take a hair from her mane or tail.

THE KELPIE - A waterlogged and frightening sight, the kelpie appears at the new moon. Though shaped like a horse, his mouth opens wide as a dog's and he definitely has fangs. Stalking the forest in the darkness, the kelpie is aggressive and dangerous. Strangely, it seems to have an ability to make creatures stick to it if they touch his fur, and will gallop to the Violinist's pond to try to drown the stuck ones and eat them.

According to a carving in the ruins, the only ways to get loose from the kelpie's body is chopping off the stuck parts, sunlight, boiling water or black faerie dust. Those wearing or holding unicorn hair will avoid getting stuck, no matter how much they touch the kelpie.

THE ANT COURT - In the week the first Adventurers arrived to the Tree, a large procession of ants started leaving it. Eventually, more humanoid-looking ants descended from above the mist line of the Tree, escorting the Ant Queen and her brood. Though obviously intelligent, they refused to speak much with the new people of the Tree, and eventually disappeared into the forest.

MITTENS - A fluffy grey tabby cat wearing a pink collar with a small bell on it. After getting lost in the woods, she stayed by the Faerie Ring for a while until she was found, and now comes to visit sometimes. She seems to like the people in the Tree, despite their very edible size, and can cross the Faerie Ring.

ABIGAIL - This little girl is Mittens' owner and a staunch believer in faeries. She loves everything magical and left little presents for the adventures after they took care of her cat. She's a fairly loud, rambunctious kid wearing dresses of a timeless style, making it difficult to see just what time period she is from. She lives in a very old Scandinavian farmhouse on the other side of a large field from the Tree, a place sometimes seen between branches and foliage before disappearing again.

THE FATHER - For those with extremely sharp eyes, Abigail's father can sometimes be seen ny a window in the house. He appears to be her only guardian, and nothing else is known about him.
